Praise (henu)

It represents the final part in a sequence of ceremonial gestures. This ritual including the act of offering praise to a god is called “Recitation of the Glorifications” and has the connotation of “jubilation” and “rejoicing.”

The hawk-headed and jackal headed gods representing the Lower and Upper Egypt are often shown in the henu position as they salute the rising sun each dawn or as celebrating the rejuvenation of the king’s ba.

The sequence: “First the worshipper knelt on one knee and extended one arm (with its hand held open) while holding the other arm (with closed fist) crooked back toward the body. As the recitation progressed the extended arm was drawn back and its hand closed. The worshipper then touched or struck his chest with alternating blows of his clenched fists. “
